Kelly "Nerdzilla" Mendenhall | Senior Community Leader and Content Specialist at SpineNation | Author and Activist
I am a recovering nonprofit professional who, after becoming suddenly medically disabled in 2017, began working in the digital space. I am now an author as well as being a content and community engagement specialist for BackerNation.
I have had three neurosurgeries from December 2018 - October 2019. My diagnoses include degenerative disc disease, myelopathy (spinal cord injury,) osteoarthritis, and piriformis syndrome (contributing to chronic sciatica.) I am very familiar with nerve and muscle pain. I have spent the last three years of my life learning how to best honor my body and control my discomfort as much as possible while moving forward with rehabilitation.
You can learn more about me and my personal story at Nerdzillakelly.com. I hope that you'll join me in the support groups, especially the Sciatica and Piriformis group as well as the Spinal Fusion support group.

Mindfulness can help a lot with mental health and chronic pain. Especially when practiced regularly. It's a small thing, but I like to try to think of things I'm thankful for each Monday as a way to kick off the week. Feel free to share what you're thankful for today, in the comments.

My birthday was in August, and my friends have surprised me with tickets to go see 311 tonight near Detroit, and dinner beforehand, etc. I haven't seen live music in person since 2014. Live music is incredibly therapeutic for me, especially this band. Not too long ago I thought I'd never be able to do this kind of thing again. My friend bought ADA tickets so we have comfortable seating and everything.
I'm excited and a little nervous about whether I'll have a bad pain flare, but therapeutically I could really use the music. Wish me luck!
