Mazor X Brings Pinpoint Precision to Spine Surgery

A new surgical guidance platform is now offering unprecedented precision to surgeons performing spine surgery.

The Mazor X system, manufactured by Mazor Robotics Ltd., represents a breakthrough and improvement from the original Renaissance system. It was developed to enhance predictability and improve patient outcomes. Spine surgery patients can now expect a more precise, more efficient, and lower risk rate when they have procedures.

The technology features a suite of software-based tools to pre-operatively assess spinal alignment and implement full surgical planning — creating a total patient treatment strategy. Combined with the surgeon's expert skill and real-time feedback from multiple data sources in the operating room, Mazor X is set to benefit patients and surgeons.

“Anything that I can do as a surgeon to be more efficient, more precise and eliminate and reduce risk for my patients will make my life easier, It will allow me to sleep better at night,” said Isador H. Liebermann, M.D. an orthopaedic surgeon in Plano, Texas.

Added Dennis P. Devito, M.D., an orthopaedic surgeon in Atlanta, Georgia, “I’m in favor of going in a direction of eliminating manual error.”

Not only can physicians formulate strategies for individual patients with a higher rate of success but through advanced 3-D imaging, Mazor X significantly improves the precise placement of surgical screws and implants during procedures.

“You plan your surgery and there is no heartache anymore,” said Orthopedic Surgeon Kornelis Poelstra, MD, Ph.D. “You know exactly where the screws are going to go.”

Isador H. Liebermann, M.D. an orthopaedic surgeon in Plano, Texas agreed with Poelstra. “These tools are just facilitating the plan, the precision, the efficiency and the outcome. It will become the standard of care."

According to reports, surgeons are currently using the Mazor X for spinal fusions to treat spinal stenosis and spondylolisthesis. Patients with these conditions often suffer with debilitating symptoms like lower back pain, leg pain, and sciatica. Other conditions treated with the technology are scoliosis, degenerative disc disease, herniated disc, kyphosis and spondylolisthesis.

The FDA-approved system is used at five hospital systems in the United States, and according to Ori Hadomi, chief executive officer of Mazor Robotics, the technology has been used in over 23,000 procedures. Dr. Christopher R. Good, spine surgeon and director of research at Virginia Spine Institute, who was on a team of the first surgeons in the Mid-Atlantic to use the technology, believes we’re looking at the future of spine surgery.

"Our research is already showing that robotic surgery can decrease intra-operative radiation to patients in the operating room, as well as improve accuracy of surgery and decrease patient complications. The new Mazor X System represents the future of robotic spine surgery and will lead to many future breakthroughs by combining robotic surgery with intra-operative spinal navigation and increase the number and types of surgeries we can perform with robot guidance,” he said.
