Q&A: Stacy Heyman On the Benefits of Natural Healing Using Essential Oils

Founded in 2008, doTERRA was built on the mission of sharing therapeutic-grade essential oils with the world. The first offering of doTERRA essential oils included 25 single oils and 10 blends and was introduced for sale on April 25, 2008. Since that time, its product offering has added many more single oils and oil blends as well as nutritional, spa, and healthy living products based on essential oil technologies and a comprehensive wellness philosophy.

BackerNation spoke with Stacy Heyman — an independent wellness advocate for doTERRA Essential Oils — and got the “dirt” (pun intended) on how beneficial essential oils can be in tension support, your back pain relief and overall welfare.

Let's get to it.

Q: First things first, can you tell us a little bit about yourself?
A: My name is Stacy. I am a South Jersey native who loves my children, animals and life. I enjoy reading and riding my horse and staying physically active. I'm most happy in the presence of my family, my dogs and my horse.

Q: How did you get introduced to essential oils and doTerra?
A: This goes back to my sister who has been using essential oils for around 25 to 30 years. About two years ago, my sister, who is also a registered nurse (RN) since 1988, spoke to me about doTERRA's pure and potent oils. Once I started incorporating these oils into my life, I immediately fell in love. When I say fell in love, I mean FELL IN LOVE. I have been a wellness advocate for one year now.

These pure essential oils are revolutionizing the way families manage their health — harnessing nature's most powerful elements and sharing these gifts with the global community. I thank my sister for introducing me to doTERRA and the wonders that are essential oils.

Q: What are essential oils?
A: Located in the heart of flowers, leaves, fruit, bark, seeds or plant roots, essential oils are a powerful aromatic concentrate. Depending on the type of plant, where it is grown and the part utilized, different essential oils are produced. Most common essential oils include lemon, lavender and peppermint.

If you have ever enjoyed the scent of a rose, you’ve experienced the aromatic qualities of essential oils. These naturally occurring volatile aromatic compounds provide plants with protection against environmental threats and play a role in plant pollination. In addition to their intrinsic benefits to plants and being beautifully fragrant to people, essential oils have long been used for food preparation, beauty treatment, and health-care practices.

Go to the plants; go to the earth for your dietary and medical needs for everything. Take the trees as an example. They are self-sufficient. They are chemically formulated to help themselves. They face the same outside threats that we face when we walk outside. As humans, we can get air filters and other products to help ourselves, but trees don't. Nature does it all for them so bringing these essential oils into your body, helps bring yourself back to its normal state. Essential oils contain the same chemical compounds that exist inside plants.

These plants are out there surviving — like the trees — through all of the adversity of Mother Nature. Whether it’s too much heat, bacteria, etc., plants can get inflamed like us, but they heal themselves from whatever is threatening them.

Q: What are some of the health care practices benefited by essential oils?
A: Most of us are exposed to synthetic foods and products that can threaten our bodies. Adding essential oils to your natural wellness cabinet can do wonders for your health, as well as for your emotional state.

In addition to:

  • Natural mosquito repellent: Combine one drop each of lemongrass oil, citronella oil and eucalyptus oil with one teaspoon of coconut oil to make natural bug spray and rub on exposed skin.
  • Reduce anxious feelings: Diffuse lavender essential oil around your home to reduce feelings of stress and tension.
  • Spiritual enlightenment: Diffuse frankincense essential oil while praying, meditating or reading to increase spiritual awareness.

Q: What's your favorite part of being a wellness advocate?
A: I love sharing the oils. I love helping people. I love changing lives. For example, let’s say you found a restaurant that was just amazing, over the top perfection. You can’t keep it in. You want others to understand how great that dining experience was. You want others to experience these life changing intrinsic benefits.

People literally send me messages all day telling me that they were prescribed anxiety medication and after properly using a blend of these oils, they feel relaxed and ready to take on the day more so than with their prescription.

Another example is this woman who hadn’t been feeling herself at all. Her entire body was inflamed. It was like she was retaining fluid like a pregnant woman, but she wasn’t pregnant. She went all over to find relief. She even went to Penn Medical in Philadelphia to get a biopsy and testing for a possible autoimmune disease. Turns out that when she deluded and rubbed the wintergreen oil all over, she said that she felt like a deflating balloon in the best way. She could feel the inflammation go down everywhere. She felt better almost immediately. Seeing the change in her attitude, behavior and overall quality of life were so special to me. It’s cases like this that warm my heart.

Q: Do you use the oils on yourself?
A: I literally use them for everything. From lip balm, fabric softener, laundry detergent, deodorant, mouthwash to dry shampoo, wood polish and even bathroom cleaning.

Q: Do essential oils smell as good as they sound?
A: I personally love them. I will say that some have a potent scent, but there are all ranges of aromas. Some people like floral scented body lotion while some hate it. Oils are the same way - some love specific scents while others dislike. I remember passing around this one oil that I particularly didn't enjoy, but everyone else loved it. It's very individual. Ironically though, I have noticed, if you are completely opposed to a certain scent chances are you may really need it. Your body is essentially screaming at you for it, so try to listen when your body talks.

Q: Do you have any back or spine condition?
A: I have a history of a ruptured C5 and C7 vertebrae in my neck/upper spine. C5 is the nerve root and a rupture at this level caused me severe shoulder pain and overall weakness. C7 is also a nerve root and the herniation of this caused even more weakness, numbness, and this tingling sensation along my arms down to my fingers.

For a very long time, I was not okay. Luckily, I am now because of my whole body approach. This is something I also firmly believe in. You need to help all parts of your body by multiple regimes.

These oils play a pivotal role in maintaining my ability to remain physically active along with sustaining a proper diet.

Q: In regards to relief, what are the best essential oils for supporting muscles and joints?
A: Chronic discomfort can be not only debilitating but also a frustrating condition because it can cause emotional or mental apprehension, impacting your ability to heal and feel good. If pain persists for more than four to six weeks, it is important to seek consultation with an experienced medical professional. There are a number of essential oils that provide relief not only from the discomfort of it but also the anxiety and stress that go hand in hand.

  • Peppermint: Cools and calms the mind and soothes muscle tension.
  • doTERRA's Soothing Blend: A blend of several oils including Wintergreen, Blue Tansy, Blue Chamomile, Peppermint, Ylang and Helichrysum that work together to soothe and cool your joints and muscles.
  • Lavender: Calms, relaxes and balances the body.
  • Sandalwood: Encourages relaxation with mental clarity.

Q: How do you apply essential oils? Can you apply essential oils in more than one way?
A: Essential oils are used for a very wide range of emotional and physical wellness applications. There are three ways you can use these essential oils.

Aromatic: Certain essential oils, when diffused, can be very stimulating, while others can be calming and soothing. Diffusing essential oils can also cleanse and purify the air of unwanted odors. You would place the oil in a diffuser and breathe in the benefits instantaneously. For example, if you have trouble sleeping, I suggest placing the Lavender oil into the diffuser. Lay down and you relaxed almost right away. Diffusing the essential oils into your environment is the easiest way to ensure you have all the benefits without infringing on your busy schedule.

  1. Fill and start the diffuser as per the manufacturer’s instructions (usually: fill water tank and add 5 – 7 drops of essential oil)
  2. Start the diffuser
  3. Go about your work while breathing in the lovely, therapeutic aromas

Topical: Essential oils are easily absorbed by the skin and can be safely applied topically. You can place them on your body with a carrier oil such as almond oil, olive oil, and/or coconut oil in various locations of your body. You may apply directly on the discomforted area or the bottom of your feet — referring to reflexology — meaning there are nerve endings on the bottom of our feet that send the oil’s benefits throughout the rest of your body. You may also apply it up and down your spine and the back of the neck. Please remember to never apply concentrated essential oils directly to your skin - always dilute first.

Internal: Certain essential oils have a rich culinary history and can be used as dietary supplements for targeted wellness. Not all oils may be consumed internally. The bottle must say 'okay for internal consumption' otherwise you would have to use the other two methods – remember that just a couple drops go a very long way.

Essential oils are both exciting and promising when it comes to taking care of your own and your family’s health. Whether you’re applying essential oils topically, enjoying the aromatic benefits through diffusing, or taking essential oils internally, the positive effects of essential oils are boundless. That’s why you’ll want to ensure that the essential oils you are using are capable of delivering on their promise. You’ll want to make sure that you are choosing essential oils for their potency and their purity.

Q: How do essential oils work chemically within your body to support muscles and joints?
A: Essential oils contain tiny molecules that have the ability to support systems in our bodies and return them to a natural physiological state. They contain healing properties and penetrate cells. These compounds go into the body to work on the root cause.

Q: Can you combine a few essential oils into one? If so, how would that work?
A: They can be used as a single oil one at a time or in a complex of blends that you can purchase directly from doTERRA already done for you, or you can make your own.

Q: Which oil is your favorite and why?
A: I always joke that the grounding blend is my drug of choice. They really are all so beneficial. This is actually the hardest question so far.

The warm, woody aroma of this grounding blend creates a sense of calm and well-being. doTERRA perfectly blends Spruce, Ho Wood, Frankincense, Blue Tansy, and Blue Chamomile with Fractionated Coconut Oil to offer an enticing fragrance that promotes tranquility and relaxation. Spruce, one of the oils in Balance, was used by Native Americans for health and spiritual reasons and is still used today to bring harmony to the mind and body. Ho Wood, Blue Tansy, and Blue Chamomile can ease anxious feelings, while Frankincense provides a grounding, balancing effect on emotions. I use three to four drops to my diffuser and presto. If I wanted to apply topically, I would apply one to two drops to the desired area. I then dilute with doTERRA's Fractionated Coconut Oil to minimize any skin sensitivity.

I also absolutely love the Lavender, which has been used and cherished for centuries for its unmistakable aroma and myriad benefits. In ancient times, the Egyptians and Romans used Lavender for bathing, relaxation, cooking and as a perfume. Today, it is widely used for its calming and relaxing qualities. Lavender is frequently used to reduce the appearance of skin imperfections. I sometimes add it to my bath water to soak away stress or apply to my temples or the back of the neck. I even add a few drops of Lavender to my pillows, bedding, or bottoms of my feet to promote a restful night’s sleep. I will say that due to Lavender’s versatile properties, it is considered the must-have oil to have on hand at all times.

Q: Have you seen any cases where there have been detrimental effects or side effects from essential oils?
A: No, I have not seen that, but you do need to use proper safety precautions when using essential oils — use only as advised.

Q: Just for fun, what are the other uses for essential oils?
A: Essential oils have been used for thousands of years in various cultures for medicinal and health purposes. Their uses range from aromatherapy, making household cleaning products, personal beauty care and natural medicine treatments. I literally use them in every aspect of my life. Like I said earlier from moisturizer, carpet cleaner, detoxifying the air and eliminating smoke to herbal teas, getting rid of mold and yoga mat spray.

I even have some oils that I use topically for my dogs and even my horse.

Q: Is there anything someone should know before using essential oils?
A: Education is key. You really need someone to assist you who is knowledgeable about the science behind these oils. You don’t just dive into prescription medications without talking to your doctor or pharmacist — essential oils are no different.

While there is a science to the distillation of essential oils, it is also an art. Distillers not only rely on years of experience, they also employ modern technologies and techniques.

The company uses 3rd party testing. They test it and then they test it again and even once more. It will be tested at least three times before released to the general public. You also want to make sure what you are buying is completely authentic. A friend of mine purchased what she thought were doTERRA oils, however, they were contaminated. You want to be careful to purchase from a certified advocate because a prescription is NOT needed, but that doesn't mean you want to buy them anywhere.

Education is key in order to get what you want out of these oils. Like I said, the best way to purchase would be directly through doTERRA via a wellness advocate like myself - you can then even get them at wholesale prices and you become a member to receive monthly benefits. It's truly limitless.

Q: Where do you store essential oils? Are there any guidelines or need-to-know information in order to properly use, store or maintain the essential oils?
A: You can store them at room temperature. They like to avoid extremes — not too cold or not too hot. They are hearty. Refrigeration is not necessary. I also suggest keeping the bottles of oils tightly sealed.

Q: Is there anything you want to say that I may have missed?
A: A fun fact that people may not know is that when experts exhumed King Tut's tomb, they found 360 liters of essential oils. The research on this proves that they are self-sustainable and that our ancestors used these for just about everything. These oils are not new medicine, they have been around for literally ever.

Another item I wanted to share was that I went to an event where I spoke at length with a chiropractor and acupuncturist. He explained that his practice’s goal was to simply help people. He’s been a certified chiropractor and acupuncturist for years now, but it wasn’t until he added essential oils to his firm that he really started to see the actual benefits these oils had on his clients. They affected his firm in the best way. The business started booming because people were finally seeing real results. He no longer accepts new clients because he’s literally busy all day – people are coming from all over to see him. He uses a three prong approach to healing – incorporating his chiropractic techniques, acupuncture work and now these oils. His clients report that the amount of muscle and nerve support derived from his three methods are helping people get back their lives and overall wellness.
